「地域に根ざし、世界へ拓く。関東以西で唯一の総合獣医学研究拠点」
私たちの社会は、愛玩動物、産業動物、そしてライフサイエンスを支える実験動物に至るまで、多種多様な動物によって支えられています。これらの動物との豊かな共存を維持することは、SDGsの目標12「つくる責任 つかう責任」の理念を実現するうえでも重要であり、人間社会の繁栄と調和を支えるために欠かすことのできない責務です。
一方で、グローバル化の進展に伴い、人獣共通感染症などのリスクは増大しており、近年の新型コロナウイルス感染症の流行が示したように、実験動物を活用した診断・治療法の開発も極めて重要です。さらに、飼い主とペット双方の高齢化や感染症拡大に伴う活動制限によって浮き彫りになったペットと飼い主の関係、公衆衛生上のリスクともなる豚熱や鳥インフルエンザなどの動物感染症の拡大など、獣医療が対応すべき課題は多岐にわたります。
こうした時代の要請を受けて、2024年春、岡山理科大学獣医学部の獣医保健看護学科および獣医学科を基盤として、岡山理科大学大学院獣医学研究科が愛媛県今治市に開設されました。 本研究科は、他大学の卒業生や社会人も積極的に受け入れる、関東以西で唯一、獣医学専攻（博士課程）と獣医保健看護学専攻（修士課程）を併せ持つ総合獣医学研究科として、多様なキャリアや背景を持つ学生に高度な学びの場を提供しています。
この二つの専攻のうち、獣医保健看護学専攻（修士課程）では、獣医保健看護学科など4年制学科の卒業生を対象とし、動物看護学や獣医関連科学の専門性を深める機会を提供しています。 一方、獣医学専攻（博士課程）では、6年制の獣医学科や医・歯・薬学系の学科の卒業生、さらには獣医保健看護学専攻（修士課程）などの修了生などを対象に、より高度な研究能力と専門性の涵養を目指しています。
本研究科では、共同研究を萌芽するオープンラボ形式の研究環境、最先端の研究機器、そして臨床と教育を担う教育動物病院など、獣医学分野の高度な教育・研究を支える体制を整えています。また、国内外で高く評価される教員が多数在籍し、科研費をはじめとする外部資金を獲得して、国内外の学術雑誌にその研究成果（https://www.vet.ous.ac.jp/paper-2024/）を発表しています。
本学での学びは、知識を深めるだけでなく、国際的な獣医療・動物科学の最前線に立つ研究力と、現場で課題を解決する実践力を養う貴重な機会でもあります。動物と人間社会をめぐる課題は今後さらに多様化・複雑化していくことが予想され、多角的な視点から課題を捉え、他者と協働しながら柔軟に対応できる力が一層求められます。 私たちは、こうした力を備えた高度専門職業人および創造的な研究者の養成をめざし、岡山キャンパスとも連携して、実践的で柔軟性のある教育研究プログラムを展開しています。本研究科は、西日本における大学院教育の新たな拠点として、地域社会と世界をつなぎ、人と動物のより良い共生社会の実現に貢献してまいります。

Message from the Dean;“A Gateway to Innovation: Beyond Veterinary Medicine — Create New Solutions, Industries, and Futures from Western Japan”
Animals play a vital role in supporting human society—whether as companions, contributors to food production, wildlife maintaining ecosystems, or laboratory animals advancing life science research. Building a sustainable and meaningful relationship with these animals is essential not only for social well-being and harmony, but also for meeting global goals like SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production.
At the same time, our increasingly interconnected world has amplified the risk of zoonotic diseases. The COVID-19 pandemic uncovered the urgent need for robust systems of disease diagnostics and treatment, often developed through research involving animal models. Ongoing challenges, such as the evolving dynamics between pets and their owners, the aging of both populations, and the spread of diseases like swine fever and avian influenza that threaten public health, demand new strategies and expertise in veterinary science.
In response to these complex demands, the Graduate School of Veterinary Science at Okayama University of Science was launched in Imabari, Ehime Prefecture in spring 2024. Built on the foundation of the university’s Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, home to both the Department of Veterinary Nursing and Science, and the Department of Veterinary Medicine, this is the only graduate school in western Japan to offer both a PhD in Veterinary Science and a Master’s in Veterinary Nursing and Science. We welcome graduates from other universities, as well as working professionals, creating a rich and diverse environment for advanced study and collaborative research.
Our Master’s program is designed for graduates of four-year programs in veterinary nursing, animal health, or life sciences, providing a pathway to deepen their knowledge and skills in animal care and veterinary biomedical science. The PhD program, meanwhile, is open to graduates of six-year veterinary programs, as well as those with backgrounds in medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, or a related Master’s degree, and is focused on fostering advanced research and specialization.
Students benefit from an open-lab research environment, access to state-of-the-art facilities, and hands-on training through our fully equipped teaching animal hospital. Our faculty includes internationally recognized researchers who together publish over 100 peer-reviewed papers annually and secure more than 70 million yen in competitive research funding each year. Through this vibrant academic ecosystem, students can gain not only deep scientific knowledge, but also the practical and investigative skills required to lead in the fields of veterinary and animal sciences worldwide.
As human-animal relationships grow more intricate, the need for professionals who can approach problems from multiple perspectives, think critically, and work collaboratively becomes ever more pressing. Our mission is to nurture such professionals—scientists and leaders equipped with the insight, adaptability, and creativity needed to address the challenges of our time.
As a new academic hub for veterinary science in western Japan, we are committed to building a healthier, more sustainable future where people and animals thrive together, locally, nationally, and globally. We look forward to welcoming you to our graduate programs.
