研究科長挨拶
2024年春に、愛媛県今治市に獣医保健看護学専攻（修士課程）と獣医学専攻（博士課程）を有する新しい大学院、岡山理科大学大学院獣医学研究科が誕生します。この研究科は、学部教育などで培った知識を深化させるだけではなく、獣医学が対応しなければならない多様でかつ複雑な問題をより効率的・効果的に対処し、解決策を実践する実行力を涵養するためのプログラムを提供します。
私たちの社会は、愛玩動物、生産動物、そして野生動物など、多くの種類の動物に支えられています。さらに、ライフサイエンス分野を支える実験動物も欠かせない存在です。これらの動物は、人間社会の繁栄と調和を維持する上で重要な役割を果たしています。
しかし、現代社会は国際的なつながりがますます加速しており、人獣共通感染症などの脅威が存在します。また、実験動物を活用した病気の診断方法･治療方法の開発の重要性は、近年の新型コロナウイルスで経験した記憶は生々しく残っています。また、外出規制で浮き彫りになったペットと飼い主の関係、飼い主とペットの高齢化、食の安全保障を脅かす豚熱や鳥インフルエンザなどの感染拡大など多くの課題が現在進行中です。
これらの動物を適切に管理し、迅速に問題を解決できる専門家の育成が、国際社会でますます求められています。私たちの使命は、獣医師、動物看護師、獣医関連科学専門家を育て、危機的な問題を未然に防ぐことです。複雑な現代社会に発生する動物に関連する課題に対処するためには、単なる深化させた知識の中から正解を見いだす能力だけでは不足です。動物に関連するさまざまな課題に取り組み、それらを解決できる人材には、動物との共存をより良く理解するための俯瞰的でかつ多面的な視点から情報を正確に抽出し、解析できる能力、リーダーシップとチームプレーヤーとしての協調性、そして失敗から学べる能力が必要です。
獣医学部獣医保健看護学科と獣医学科を基盤とし、獣医学関連の研究を通じて新しい研究領域や産業を育む創造力を発揮できる高度な研究者を育てます。加えて、獣医学関連分野における将来のリーダーとなる人材を育成します。
私たちの獣医学研究科が提供する教育研究プログラムは、西日本における教育機会の地理的な空白を埋めることで地域社会に貢献し、動物と人間社会の共存を支え、より健康で持続可能な未来を築くために準備しました。ぜひ、私たちの獣医学研究科への参加を検討してみてください。

Greetings from the Dean of the Graduate School of Veterinary Science
In spring 2024, a new graduate school, the Okayama University of Science Graduate School of Veterinary Science (OUSGVS), offering Master’s program in Veterinary Nursing and Science and the PhD program in Veterinary Science, will be established in Imabari, Ehime Prefecture. Our mission is to deepen knowledge acquired during undergraduate education and develop practical problem-solving skills to efficiently address complex and diverse issues in veterinary medicine.
Our society relies heavily on various animals, including companion animals, livestock, and wildlife, as well as laboratory animals crucial for life sciences research. These animals play vital roles in maintaining the prosperity and harmony of human society.
However, the modern world is increasingly interconnected, leading to global challenges such as zoonotic diseases. The significance of using laboratory animals for disease diagnosis and treatment development, as highlighted by the recent COVID-19 pandemic, remains evident. Issues like the relationships between pets and their owners, aging of both pets and owners, and the spread of infectious diseases, such as swine fever and avian influenza, pose ongoing challenges.
The demand for experts capable of managing these animals effectively and swiftly resolving problems is growing on an international scale. Our mission is to nurture veterinarians, animal nurses, and veterinary science specialists to proactively address critical issues. To tackle the complex challenges related to animals in today’s society, it is not sufficient to rely solely on knowledge. To effectively address various animal-related issues we must extract and analyze information accurately from a comprehensive and multidimensional perspective, understand the coexistence with animals better, demonstrate leadership, collaborate effectively in teams, and learn from failures.
Here we will provide a series of education and training requited for advanced scientists who can contribute to the creation of new research fields and industries through veterinary-related research. Furthermore, we will provide supports for students to be future leaders in the field of veterinary medicine. We look forward to accepting you to join our programs in OUSGVS.
